Santa Teresa Gallura in 1808: the plan for a new town
The Royal Diploma of 12 August 1808, Pietro Francesco Maria Magnon's role and the town plan in the municipal historical archive.
A founding document
On 12 August 1808, King Victor Emmanuel I issued a Royal Diploma establishing a new settlement near the Tower of Longon Sardo. The document connects the name Santa Teresa with the king's consort. The University of Cagliari catalogues the founding document; the municipal archive explains its context and notes that locally held copies survive, while the original Diploma has not been traced there.
Magnon and the town plan
The Municipality assigns Captain Pietro Francesco Maria Magnon, commander of the Tower of Longon Sardo, an important role in advocating a settlement. It also points out a limit in the evidence: his requests to his superiors have not survived locally.
The urban plan predates the Diploma. The municipal archive describes a drawing dated 9 May 1807, with quadrilateral squares and streets meeting at right angles, inspired by Turin's layout. The street grid is therefore part of the documented history of the town.
A new community
In 1812 the king approved a plan to establish a rectory for the new community. These records illuminate the settlement's civic and religious beginnings. They do not, by themselves, establish when every present-day form of the patronal festival began.
